As of April 2025, the United States is facing a major measles outbreak, mainly in Texas and New Mexico. Since the beginning of the year, more than 700 cases have been reported across the country, with over 540 cases occurring in Texas alone.

Unfortunately, three fatalities have been associated with this outbreak, including two unvaccinated children in Texas and one adult in New Mexico. Health officials blame the resurgence on falling vaccination rates, which have been influenced by misinformation and inadequate public health funding. 

Given the highly contagious nature of measles—infecting as many as 90% of unvaccinated people who are exposed—it’s essential to take preventive actions to safeguard both yourself and your community.

5 Precautions to Take In Case of a Measles Outbreak

• Vaccination is Key

The MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine is proven to be very effective, offering more than 97% protection when administered in two doses. It’s recommended that children receive their first dose between 12 and 15 months of age, followed by a second dose at ages 4 to 6 years. 

If you are uncertain about your vaccination status, please reach out to your healthcare provider. Adults who lack documented immunity should also think about getting vaccinated, particularly if they intend to travel or are likely to be in close contact with at-risk groups.

• Avoid Crowded Places Unless Necessary

Measles is transmitted via respiratory droplets and can remain airborne for as long as two hours. In the event of an outbreak, steer clear of crowded areas such as shopping centers, schools, and public transit, especially if you are not vaccinated or looking after infants. 

If you need to venture out, think about wearing a mask and keeping a safe distance from others.

• Good Hygiene of Utmost Importance

Consistent handwashing with soap and water, utilizing hand sanitizer, and shielding your mouth when you cough or sneeze can help minimize the transmission of the virus. 

Instill these practices in children and make sure to frequently disinfect surfaces that are often touched.

• Watch Out For Symptoms

Stay alert for signs like a high fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, and a characteristic red rash that usually begins on the face and then spreads.

• Follow Public Health Guidance
